Two reasons:
1: You need a convertible
2: Because I want one

Yeah, but this time, don't make it a Caddy 'Vette that's lux'd up with watered down performance.
The Alpha platform is a great place to start, since it's already spawning the ATS-V, and it's about to spawn the 3rd Gen CTS-V.
Plus, it's about to spawn the 6th gen Camaro.
This is the perfect time to make what could either end up being an excellent American F-Type fighter, or a modern day Mercury Cougar, hopefully leaning more towards the latter than the former.
Bring in a little more Corvette technology and technique.
Maybe some fiberglass or aluminum, some lightweight space-frame, a la Audi.
Turbocharging, supercharging, all wheel drive, quickly folding aluminum hardtop, manual transmission, make things like that either standard or optional.
Make it unique, luxurious, fun to drive, a Cadillac worth paying $80k+ for.
Make it a modern day Cadillac masterpiece that looks to the future, without ever forgetting it's roots.
So...basically, here's the kind of specs I'd be looking for in a new era XLR:
- 3,300-3,700 lb curb weight
- Turbocharged 3.2 liter V6 engine for standard models, Supercharged 5.0 liter V8 for V models.
- Front-mid engine, Rear Wheel Drive/All Wheel Drive layout.
- Three bodystyle options: Coupe w/ standard panoramic moonroof, Targa, folding aluminum hardtop.
- 101-105 inch wheelbase, 170-180 inch overall length.
- 7-speed Tremec TR-6070 manual transmission or 8-speed 8L90 automatic transmission from the C7 Stingray, but with unique tuning and gear ratios.
- Standard 2-piece steel disc brake discs with carbon ceramic pads and 4 piston calipers with the option to upgrade to carbon ceramic discs and 6 piston calipers, and standard ABS, ESC, and advanced traction control systems that can all be turned off with the press of a button.
- Target price: $83-88k for standard models, $95-106k for V models.
Something that truly speaks to the sort of customer Cadillac wants to sell to, not the kind you'd usually expect to buy a Cadillac. Something that turns heads, and makes hearts pound.
A true, American grand tourer with style, performance, and comfort that doesn't follow the world standard, it raises the bar in dramatic fashion.

If they do it right, it'd be a good idea. I'd call it the Cadillac CT0. The V model should get the Z06 engine. Maybe give it some carbon fiber and aluminum. Shared powertrains, but far more luxurious, without a massive price premium. I'd say for the top of the line model, somewhere around $90k. Here's a 5 minute MS paint chop up for what I think it should look like.

Little too similar in my opinion but after five minutes I get the idea.
